Features
- Next-level G Master performance: even sharper with gorgeous bokeh1 2 XA (extreme aspherical) elements achieve eye-opening resolution right out to the image edges. Eyes and expressions can be captured with stunning clarity regardless of framing. Sony's Nano AR Coating II suppresses flare and ghosting in just about any lighting. Minimum focus distance is 2.79ft (0.85m) (AF) / 2.63ft (0.8 m) (MF).
- Stunning G Master bokeh with smoother transitions The FE 85mm F1.4 GM II carries on the acclaimed performance of the FE 85mm F1 .4 GM with a new optical design that controls chromatic aberration for more natural bokeh. An 11-blade circular aperture provides further enhancement, while precisely controlled spherical aberration works with XA (extreme aspherical) elements to minimize onion-ring bokeh.
- The full AF speed and precision of advanced Alpha-series bodies can be realized Two XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors and high-speed control give the FE 85mm F1.4 GM II AF speed that is up to 3x faster3 than previous model4 . Moving subject tracking is improved by as much as 7x5, allowing reliable capture even when using extremely narrow depth of field at F1 .4
- Smaller and lighter1 with no image quality compromise extreme dynamic) linear motors, and a compact circular aperture unit pack superb large aperture performance into a barrel that measures just 3-3/8” (84.7mm) x 4-1/4” (107.3 mm) and weighs only 22.7 oz. (642 g).
- ED glass elements minimize chromatic aberration for precisely rendered edge detail Two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements significantly reduce flare and ghosting by taking axial chromatic aberration and chromatic aberration (due to differences in magnification) out of the picture.
- An ideal 85mm F1.4 lens for filmmaking The FE 85mm F1.4 GM II is an ideal choice for filmmaking. It works perfectly with Real-time Recognition AF in a-series bodies, for fast, precise, quiet subject tracking that maintains sharp focus on moving subjects even at F1.4.
- Professional control Two customizable focus hold buttons and an AF/MF switch offer flexible operability, while an independent aperture ring and Linear Response MF focus control provide intuitive control for creative shooting. The FE 85mm F1.4 GM II accepts 77mm threaded filters.
- Rugged reliability A dust and moisture resistant design8 ensure reliability in challenging outdoor conditions. The front lens element features a fluorine coating that repels fingerprints, dust, water, oil, and other contaminants.
- Round-shaped, bayonet mount lens hood A round-shaped, bayonet mount lens hood ALC-SH180 provides a rubber outer ring, and a button press lock/unlock is supplied, and available separately as an optional accessory.

Great lens
This is the perfect lens for portraits. I was a little skeptical about how much better it would be than the 24-70 f2.8 but wow. The 1.4 makes a huge difference. Blown away by the results.

Best 85mm for the Sony Ecosystem
Worth every penny. Images are sharp. Lens is fast and doesn’t make much noise. The background compression when shooting wide open is amazing.

Sony 85mm GM II
Overall, the Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM II is a standout lens: it makes major improvements over the original 85mm GM in sharpness, autofocus, and manages to shave off size and weight, while retaining excellent bokeh and optical quality. It’s not perfect, and comes with a high price tag, but for many working portrait artists or content creators, it feels like “worth it” if you can stretch the budget.

Fantastic lens
[Employee of bestbuy] Absolute monster of a lense. Crazy Bocah. This lens lets in so much light that I had to shoot at very high shutter speed (4000-8000) and minimum iso to use it at 1.4 on a sunny day. The attached photo is an example of that. (Had to compress it to attach here)
